FD5- Final Exam

Psychologically We Are All The Same

For many of years, the world has dealt with many racism discriminations. As humans, we discriminate people by race, ethnicity, skin colors, and size. In the United States we discriminate people by skin color. When our current President Barak Obama was elected President some people gave up on discriminating others by color of skin because Obama is half white and half black but his skin color is black. Previously, we always had white skin color Presidents and as American citizens we still elected Obama aside of his skin color. It proves that we set aside discrimination for what is right and will give our country a safe environment. For others to not discriminate and have solution for hate crimes, we need to prove people can get along without knowing others race, ethnicity, and skin colors. [THESIS] Having people behind computers or talking on a phone with a voice changer will help solve hate crimes and show others we are all alike despite skin color, race, and ethnicities. [THESIS]

Daily we deal with hate crimes even if we don’t know it. People will discriminate others for being a certain race like the Jews leading to the Holocaust. Holocaust is a history of discriminations in the world. In the 20th century we still deal with similar problems, just like in the article “Cornell Student is Accused of Hate Crimes in Stabbing” where the a 20 year old white student named Nathan H. Poffenbarger, drank some alcohol before attending a fraternity party and he made some direct remarks during the pledge. It was stated that “8 to 25 years; three counts of assault in the second degree as a hate crime; and tampering with evidence.” Due to Poffenbarger’s discrimination he caused hate crimes to stab someone that had a different skin color. This type of incident doesn’t just happen once or twice, it happens every single day. We deal with people causing hate crimes

In another article, Bias Crimes Found in All Areas of City, there was a quote “In the University District, two white men yell, “Look at the chinks!” from a balcony and spit at two young Asian Americans.” That quote showed we have hate crimes in different states, countries and even in your neighborhood. From a movie I watched called Hotel Rwanda, they were literally all African Americans but they were separated by Tutsi and Hutus. The innocent Tutsi were killed just because they weren’t a Hutu. This is an example of hate crimes between what is almost considered the same skin color and came from the same race. Hate crime can happen between anyone.

When we have so much hate crimes. Having people talking to others behind phones with a voice changer or behind a computer helps lower the rate of discriminations. Others aren’t able to see how the person on the opposite line looks like through a phone and will make them care less of their race and what color their skin is. When they start to talk more on the phone people are able to get to know the person more. When behind a computer you are able to use the technology of finding a different picture that looks like you but showing yourself as a different skin color. In technology now, we have Photoshop to change the way we look like plastic surgery.

At times the computer or phone won’t work to hate crimes because when one person wants to hang out with the opposite end person, the lie will be revealed. Unless plastic surgery is done they will see that the person is not white or not the race they said they were. When the other person finds out they might cause a hate crime to stab or beat that person up because of his skin color lie. Hate crime are worse when someone already doesn’t like a certain race and when they find out that they had lie to them it causes more problems.

From my personal experience, I say I hate Micronesians which is over populated in Hawaii especially Honolulu. I have had thoughts of wishing they didn’t exist in this world or not being surrounded by them. The things that I see Micronesians do, I can’t give them the benefit of the doubt because from my view I see they take the governments money, high school drop outs and their lazy. What I really don’t know if it’s really true. Last semester in my Eng 209 class, I met this Micronesian girl who I thought was really smart. She proved to me that not all Micronesians are the type I thought.

In conclusion, we shouldn’t cause hate crimes even if we don’t like that person for their skin color. We really don’t know how they truly are inside. We should all accept others for being different. As time passes we all have to deal with the same things over again but we want to prevent ourselves to killing others. Hate crimes can’t be fully stopped but we can try to lessen the problems.

Right to Speak Out

Being born or naturalized to become a United States of America citizen both as stated in our first amendment gives us the right to be speaking from our mind. When others try to take advantage of this amendment they suffer in severe consequences. [THESIS] We have the right to speak freely and express our feelings to things that happen around us to help make our conscience feel better. [THESIS]

In the Bill of Rights article, our First Amendment is stated “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” According to the article, First Amendment Overview,” the First Amendment of the United States Constitution is the Freedom of expression which consists of the rights to freedom of speech, press.” They state the basic concept of freedom of expression is the right of freedom of speech. This allows each individual to speak for themselves. But when negative words being said leads to cause violence are said it is against the Supreme Court and the government’s law. The first amendment allows us the right to speak freely but breach of the peace is prohibited to be said.

From my personal experience, I like that the first amendment gives us the right to speak our thoughts freely. I remembered in 8th grade when the incident of 9/11 happened, one of my teachers was affected and we could understand how it affects us emotionally. We had a discussion to talk about the situation and we noticed that everyone felt hurt. Being able to speak out helps you feel better.

In one of the articles, Churchill Attacks Essay’s Critics, it showed that people came to Churchill’s speech and they spoke up for the 9/11 people they believed that what he did was wrong. People didn’t agree with his theory. People used their right to speak freely about their feelings and opinions. In Churchill article when he used the words “little Eichmans” to describe the “technicians”. It also relates to the comparison of Adolf Eichmann, who was the man from World War 2who structured the Holocaust that lead to kill many of Jews. Churchill aimed this towards the “investment bankers and others who make the killing of innocents by the U.S. military and U.S. policy possible.” In that statement, there is a theory that states when a different ethnicity comes to America and the military kills them for some reason, the other country will turn around and want to kill an American. Making that speech draws people’s attention to speak up because using “little Eichmans” to describe technicians were hurtful. To a perspective, when you are that ethnicity you may understand it more clearly than other ethnicities. When others, of different ethic will disagree and speak up with their thoughts.

Following the thoughts of Ward Churchill speech, there is an article called “Some People Push Back,” where in the article it states that “the reason for this holocaust was/is rather simple, and stated quite straightforwardly by President George Bush, the 41st "freedom-loving'” I honestly believe that the Holocaust is well known history. The Nazi were well known during the Holocaust and they would fully “support for Hitler suffered no serious erosion among Germany's "innocent civilians" until the defeat at Stalingrad in 1943.” It is something we often hear people talk about and softhearted people feel sorry for the Jews. When you see videos and pictures of ways Jews died it gives you the urge of wanting to speak up for them. It is the same when you see video of the 9/11 incident you feel sorry for the families and people who are affected by the threat to America.

Although we have been talking about the first amendment is the freedom of speech, Churchill has an article that states Churchill is not about freedom of speech. The article said “Someone who approves the killing of the business people and calling them “technocrats” and “little Eichmann’s” in the World Trade Center is irresponsible.” That statement to me seems really hurtful reading it even thought Churchill later feels regrets of killing in children. He showed the violence and thought it was good for those people. People that hear his speech can’t hold back and not speak up that his speech is untrue and unfair. In the articles there are pictures of people saying the victims of 9/11 were heroes. I totally agree with that poster, 9/11 victims died because maybe at of another American’s fault. Everyone has the right to speak up that shows our amendment 1whether it is something people want to hear or not.

According to a classmate Chantelle Lee, she said “Ward Churchill was insensitive and should of thought of his words before saying anything. Especially as a professor, he's supposed to be a role model. His selfless acts created a world wind of controversy all over.” I totally agree with her because Churchill didn’t think of how his speech affected others. According to another classmate, Jongseon Kwon, he said, “Churchill must seek for forgiveness from the citizens who had to endure his speech. Although he may have freedom to speak, it is impossible for citizen to filter what to listen.” I agree with Jongseon Kwon because like Chantelle Lee said about the speech Churchill made, Jongseon made a statement about forgiveness from citizens who had to deal and go through his speech and as people we do filter out what we don’t want to hear. Like an old saying it goes in one ear and out the other ear.

In conclusion I think that people speaking up is important especially in tragic situations like the Holocaust and 9/11. Many victims suffered to save other lives. In 9/11 the people in the World Trade Center and Twin Towers weren’t at fault. In the Holocaust, the Jews didn’t deserve to be crucially killed. Everyone in the United States of America has the right to speak up and share their thoughts. As United States Citizens we not only have the right to freedom of speech but we as humans have the right to listen and believe or disagree and ignore the statements that are made.

Honesty Can Be Twisted Into White Lies

As we all grew up, we were told by our parents to go to bed early or the boogie man will eat us. We were also told when kids lose a tooth the tooth fairy will give them money for their tooth if they put it under their pillow before going to sleep. As you got older you understood the fact that your parents say that is to scare you and make sure you get the amount of sleep you need and get you to do what needs to be done. Parents lie for a good purpose even if their lie is unbelievable to the adult but as we know kids will believe almost anything. [THESIS] Honesty in our roles as tomorrow’s parents and leaders are important in kids’ life but we go around the guidelines to make sure kids follows our rules and does what is needed to be done. [THESIS]

The lies that parents think are good for kids and will make them do what the parents want affects them in great ways. As they get older they will live in the world thinking they have to go to sleep early or a boogie man will pop out of their closet to eat them. Kids are gullible so they will believe that boogie mans exist and they end up having nightmares. Parents need to tell their kids the truth of why going to sleep is important then telling them a lie that will scare them to doing what they want. Certain times the kid is smart enough to figure out that their parent has lied to them and they think it is okay to lie too. So, kids will start lying to their parents about making a mess or blame on others for something they did.

According to the article “The Truth about a Child's Compulsive Lying”, children do lie and parents know that for a fact. Children will lie because of many reasons they are in fear of their parents or it has become part of their personality. They won’t just be lying to their parents but also to their friends and maybe even their teachers. The major thing why kids lie is because of fear which they break something and they are afraid if they tell their parents the truth they will get in big trouble such as grounded or simply being yelled at. Kids are afraid of their punishment so they use the lie to hide it.

By nature everyone lies, it doesn’t matter what age, gender, or race you are. According to the article “Why people lie – and how to tell if they are” has said that “It may only be “white” lies, but everyone tells lies or “omits the truth” sometimes. We start lying at around age 4 to 5 when children gain an awareness of the use and power of language. This first lying is not malicious, but rather to find out, or test, what can manipulated in a child’s environment.” That statement proves that white lies are to avoid telling the truth you go around the boundaries of telling a lie even if it’s half of the truth it’s still considered lying. The environment kids grow up in will affect how they act.

When I grew up I was scared of my parents because I once told them the truth and I got spankings or hit with those feather wooden sticks. I learned my lesson that day not to make the same mistake. So, when I had done something wrong I would have to lie to my parents to get out of being hit because I know it was very painful. I was in fear of my parents because I didn’t want to deal with the consequence.

In the article “Children: lying and honesty”, there were good points because they gave a list of how to deal with children that are dishonest such a “1) Family Values 2) Role Modeling 3)Teach White Lies 4) Teach Fantasy and Reality 5) Reward Honesty 6) Ask Before You Take 7) Problem Solving 8) Older Children.” With these 7 significant points to teach children about being honest it will help children understand and learn why we need to be honest. For example, 5) Reward Honesty, every child loves to have rewards because kids do things for a treat so if you teach them to tell the truth during their hard times you can reward them with a candy treat. This is a great way of teaching kids how to be honest with adults and others.

As one of our classmates Mary Jane Maluyo states our laulima discussion “WHITE LIE - Telling a best friend that his girlfriend is a cheat and a lie might be a very difficult thing to do especially after meeting her for the first time. Many things can occur such as your best friend not believing you. But I do feel that it is not ok if one should lie about how they really feel even if it might hurt the other person. If the best friend still does not believe, at least he/she was honest with him in the first place.” I totally agree with her because it is a true fact. When your best friend ask you about that person you have decided to give a white lie to tell him she is great even if you truly know she isn’t. It takes time to actually have the courage to tell your friend the truth. The white lie covers up what you will hurt your friends feelings. On occasions that what we call a white lie is acceptable to not hurt someone you truly care for.

In conclusion, honesty is important for parents to teach their kids as they are growing up because kids will adapt that world when they get older. They will have to tell the truth in real life once they start going to high school or college. When the parents tell the kids the truth of why they want them to sleep early instead of making up a scary boogie man story to make them go to sleep will help the kids better about themselves. As kids grow up they will understand the meaning of being honest and how a white lie sometimes are okay to keep their friends feelings from being hurt.

Advertisements Are for Good Purpose

There are advertisements everywhere but what you don’t know is if it is meaningful or not. Certain times we see advertisements as a craver and distraction such as when you are at the movie theater you see advertisements on buying popcorn. On televisions you see commercials of guys drinking Coors light, when the ice turns blue means it is cold and refreshing to you or maybe you see the tag cologne commercial that says the cologne will attract girls to you. Some advertisements may give negative impact or send out the wrong impression to you. [THESIS]By far, there are commercials that send out positive messages and they may even affect your daily lifestyle. [THESIS]

When you are out on a normal day like every other day you pass by smokers and they don’t know that smoking affects not just them but also affects you, the person breathing in that same air. There are commercials for anti-tobacco showing that second hand smoking causes the air to be unhealthy for others and may lead to death. In one of the youtube video they showed that a lady smoking tobacco at a party was an invisible killer to others because eighty five percent of the time they cannot see the pollution in the air they breathe in. They show that you need to be considerate to the people around you such as kids, men, women, elders, and people with medical problems. In another youtube video, they have a very catchy tune showing a version of the Brady Bunch where the mother of 3 girls is a smoker and the youngest has asthma while a father of 3 boys who is also a smoker caused one of the sons to have early heart problems because of second hand smoking. When the 2 single parents suddenly joined together to become a family the children become surrounded in a house of smoking parents that causes them to be in a second hand smoking environment and they eventually deal with greater health problems. This video in a way had a fallacy of hasty generalization because they didn’t give much evidence on it. Studies have shown second hand smoking kills the other person more than the smoker. There are commercials that show facts to smokers letting them know how long they will live if they smoke and how long the other person will live from their second hand smoking.

Smokers alone have to deal with their own health problems. In this youtube video, the husband had a real life sad story about his wife who smoked until she found out she had cancer and she smoked even more after that. He talked about the pain he had to go through seeing his wife smoke more and more even when she was diagnosed with cancer. The husband Rick Stoddard also has a website telling the story of his wife. He also shares with people the pain he goes through losing his wife. Ideally, smoking affects you and the people that truly love and care about you because when you suffer through smoking you significant other is hurt seeing you in pain.

These commercials make it more believing to me because I experienced it myself. I have dealt with smokers in public and I personally can’t stand the smell because once I smell it I start coughing. Although I have noticed that there are lots different smells of tobacco because the ones that are strong I tend to cough harder and the ones that aren’t so strong my coughs are minor. From my coughing I experience how it affects my health and my breathing.

There are many commercials that advise smokers to quit smoking. In a real life story like Rick Stoddard will have impact others because when they hear about his wife and the pain he has to go through losing his wife will make smokers think differently. There are quit lines for smokers to call in and people there will help them try to quit smoking. Tobacco quit lines some have free patches and they are also confidential to help smokers that want to quit succeed. One of the youtube videos shows a American cancer Society Quit Line where they have professional cousleors to guide you step by step. They help you find what you can do to make your life back on tract.

As I talk about smoking, there are other drugs such as meth that has many commercials to tell you the danger in them. One of our classmates Mary Jane Maluyo said in our online discussion “There are also some ads that give awareness to drugs and alcohol. For example: an ad on crystal meth. They show scenes on what would happen if an individual tries meth just once.” I truly agree with her and this statement relates to my point on smoking commercials. When they talk about crystal meth in commercials it is really sad when they show you how dangerous the drug is and what it will do to you.

Commercials do have the negative side of it, where one of our classmates Jocelyn Contrades stated in our online discussion “Materialism is just one of the negative effects of ads on our lives. In contrary to its promise of making our life better and more comfortable, it somehow misleads us to unhealthy choices and behavior. More people are taking diet pills instead of sweating it out and improving eating habit.” I totally agree with her because even though smoking commercials send positive messages there are commercials on weight loss by taking pills that doesn’t help your health but it makes you become materialistic to want to look slim and want to be like the model on TV.

In conclusion, there are ads that not only send out negative messages but they send out positive messages to people and help change their lives or make it better. With smoking it’s a really big deal to people because it’s happening everyday around us with people we know like our friends, family, relatives, and coworkers but we have to let people know. The commercials are trying to help smokers and non smokers. Letting us know the true facts makes the world a better place for everyone around us. Lots of the commercials on television these days show us how to stay healthy and keep away from drugs. Everyone won’t know all of these until they actually see it on television and experience the lost of someone or the true ugliness of what drugs can do to you. Even though they have commercials that send out the wrong message on your lifestyle it may help you feel better.

He also shares with people the pain he goes through losing his wife. Ideally, smoking affects you and the people that truly love and care about you because when you suffer through smoking you significant other is hurt seeing you in pain.

Overall, when you the smoke think twice because you are harming yourself and when you get health problems you are hurting your family because they will be sad to deal with losing you. You the smoker will also affect innocent people by smoking because you will pollute the fresh air people breath in causing them to have minor through severe health problems. Cigarettes contain more than 4000 chemical compounds and at least 400 toxic substances and they cause you to have lung cancer. Smoking also causes cardiovascular disease which is one of the major health problem smokers will have that leads to death. The commercials shows facts to smokers letting them know how long they will live if they smoke and how long the other person will live from their second hand smoking.

From my personal experience, I have dealt with smokers in public and I personally can’t stand the smell because once I smell it I start coughing. Although I have noticed that there are lots different smells of tobacco because the ones that are strong I tend to cough harder and the ones that aren’t so strong my coughs are minor. From my coughing I experience how it affects my health and my breathing.

On the website the truth.com they show facts about “smokeless tobacco is associated with gingivitis, dental caries, abrasion, and staining also increases risk of oral cancer, and is strongly associated with, adverse effects on both oral and systematic health.” In tobacco sales “revenues from smokeless tobacco sales reached $2.36 billion in 2002 and $2.61 billion in 2005.” When you look at that digit of the revue shows how much people spend on tobacco and its saddening because they invest money to ruin their lives.

There are many commercials that advise smokers to quit smoking. In a real life story like Rick Stoddard will have impact others because when they hear about his wife and the pain he has to go through losing his wife will make smokers think differently. Letting us know the true facts makes the world a better place for everyone around us. Lots of the commercials on television these days show us how to stay healthy and keep away from drugs. Everyone won’t know all of these until they actually see it on television and have the feeling of that person or their parents.
